A 6th Grader from Kageyo Receives Top Honors

Murungi Diana who attended Kageyo Primary School, a government school managed by Africa New Life, received the top scores on her national exam. Diana met the First Lady of Rwanda, Jeannette Kagame and received gifts from her. As a result of Diana’s performance, she now attends New Life Christian High School, Africa New Life’s school in Kayonza that is ranked 5th in the nation.
Here Diana models everything she received as a top performer in Rwanda.
FAMOUS Guest House Baked Oatmeal Recipe

For those who asked for it….here it is!
To everyone…ENJOY!
Baked Oatmeal (serves 6)
Mix dry ingredients together in a bowl:
2 cups oatmeal (regular or quick cooking)
1/3 cup sugar
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp nutmeg
1 tsp salt
Mix wet ingredients together in a bowl:
1/2 cup milk
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla
2 tbsp vegetable oil
Combine dry & wet ingredients.
Grease 8 inch square cake pan and pour batter into pan. Bake, uncovered, at 350 for 25 minutes, or until set in the middle.
Serve fresh out of the oven with warm milk/cream, fruit and drizzled honey. (We use bananas in Rwanda.)
It can also be prepared the evening before and refrigerated overnight to bake in the morning.

In February, the Eggers family, owners of The Pumpkin Patch, traveled to Rwanda to help with farming projects in Kayonza and Kageyo. They wanted to do more to raise awareness and sponsorship in Rwanda. Please stop by the market this summer or fall to show your support!
The Pumpkin Patch is also selling Rwandan baskets made by a women’s cooperative in Kageyo. All proceeds will go directly back to these women and help raise them out of poverty.
My Shyaka Fred

Standing at a Child Sponsorship booth just one month after I began at Africa New Life, I found Fred. I was supposed to be there to encourage others to sponsor, but I couldn’t help sponsoring one myself.
Shyaka Fred was four years old and wearing a ratty, dirty shirt. Even at such a young age, his eyes shone bright with joy and light.
My husband, Chris, and I took a team to Rwanda the following month. As we pulled into the Africa New Life school in Kayonza, our interpreter jumped out of the car and ran inside.
“Brooke,” he said, as he peered around the corner of the doorway at me. “What is your boy’s name?” Before I had a chance to answer, there was Shyaka Fred. My eyes teared up as I ran over to him and smothered him with a hug. (more…)
